This morning we learned from our ArtPrize correspondent, Jeffrey Songco, that an entry located in the Gerald R. Ford Museum might be stolen.

Mher Khachatryan's entry, Jesus, is a 13' by 6' painting of Jesus Christ.  But, this painting is almost an exact copy of a photo on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' Media Library.

The problem with this isn't that he used the photo for inspiration, it's that the face in the painting and photo are identical.  What makes matters worse is that the photo is not to be used for commercial use and using it as an entry into ArtPrize would make it commercial use.

Unless otherwise indicated, individuals may post material from the Media Library portion of this site to another website or on a computer network for their own personal, noncommercial use. via LDS Media Library

Unfortunately, we can't do a side by side on our website because the photo cannot be used for commercial use, but you can check it out here.

What do you think?  Did the artist just use the photo as inspiration, or did he trace/steal the image for his work?
