Gary Taubes posted a story in the New York Times Magazine blog today questioning the food safety of one of the western diet's most beloved components - sugar.

Not just table sugar or high fructose corn syrup, but both. He goes as far as to use the word "toxic".

He cites research by Robert H. Lustig, MD, of the University of California, who has a lengthy YouTube video on the subject which has racked up nearly one million views.

On the other side of the argument, nutritionist Alan Aragon calls it "alarmism" and posted a brief rebuttal to the video on his blog.

Just the same, I think I'll try to take it easy on the Easter candy this year.
