MLive reports that a Tesla Service Center is coming to 2919 29th St. SE, which is the former site of the Prestige Imports dealership.

Until recently, due to a 2014 law, Tesla was unable to sell cars directly to customers in the state of Michigan. So Michiganders had to travel to other states to buy Teslas and to have them serviced.

According to MLive, the electric automaker reached an agreement with Attorney General Dana Nessel in January, which now "allows Tesla to service, sell and deliver vehicles in Michigan using a subsidiary. However, the vehicles have to be titled in another state and then transferred to Michigan."

Tesla's other service center in the state is in Clarkson, and it opened last year. From the sounds of it, shortly after a showroom or "gallery" then opened next door.

So what do we know about the new "service center" coming to Grand Rapids? According to Wood TV 8,

Records filed with the Kent County Register of Deeds show the landlord, Ohio-based Sean Properties Michigan, LLC, began leasing the 29th Street space to Tesla on Nov. 6 — the same day a building permit application was filed with the city.

The application called for 'limited' improvements to the interior of the building “for ‘TESLA, INC.’ auto sales, delivery and vehicle service center.” Stakeholders estimated the renovations would cost about $500,000.

That "auto sales" part in the application leads to me to believe that yes, you will be able to buy a Tesla in Grand Rapids... but I guess we'll know for sure soon enough. The new Tesla building is set to open later this month or next, a spokesperson from Sean Properties confirmed to MLive.
