The Michigan DNR is sharing some information that many of us hope we never need to know, how to identify a Michigan rattlesnake.

A Michigan rattlesnake is technically an eastern massasauga rattlesnake. Eastern massasaugas are Michigan's only venomous snake and its population is declining due to habitat loss.

The Michigan DNR explains how to identify a Michigan rattlesnake by its rattle, size and special markings. They encourage all to enjoy the snake from a distance with the reminder "if you leave the snake alone it will leave you alone".

The opportunity to see a Michigan rattlesnake would be an unforgettable experience. Whether you hope to see one or not, this video will teach you how to identify an eastern massasauga rattlesnake.
