GVSU Offering Love and Support to Students of Closing Michigan University
What does a college student do when their university decides shut the doors and close?
Shocking, right?
That is exactly what is happening to the students at Michigan's Siena Heights University.
Siena Heights, a catholic university that was founded in 1919, is a private school, and times have been tough lately. "There have been shifts in demographics, a declining enrollment, and rising costs," that have impacted the decision to close the university, Lenconnect.com reported.
President Douglas Palmer said:
"It is just not possible to continue beyond this next year. We’re not the first college and university to close, nor will we be the last."
Siena Heights will continue to operate through the 2025-26 academic year, but that will be their last.
So, what in the world is a student body of more that 1,800 to do?
Grand Valley State University to the rescue!
Grand Valley State stated that "GVSU will guarantee admission to all Siena Heights students who are in good academic standing. B Donta Truss, GVSU vice president for Enrollment Development and Educational Outreach, said the university is launching multiple support resources to ensure a seamless transition," GVNext.edu reported.
This is certainly a big lifeline for the Siena Heights students who obviously are worried about continuing their education and thinking now what!
GVNext.edu also said that Grand Valley State said that students in good academic standing would be admitted. They would extend the transfer Merit Scholarship deadline, make sure that financial aid would be available for all students eligible, and offer online and hybrid opportunities for students who prefer this.
What about Faculty and Staff?
Siena Heights said they will be working with all of the staff to help them into the next phase of their careers.
