Grand Valley State University has officially banned alcohol at fraternity and sorority events after numerous incidents over the last several years.

According to the Detroit Free Press, 9 fraternities have been sanctioned or suspended due to alcohol related incidents in the last 5 years.  GVSU says that the ban isn't in response to any specific issues this semester, but instead they are doing this as a preventative measure.

There is no indication as to when the ban will be lifted, but spokespeople for GVSU say that "We need to take a pause, understand what's happening, and how we can come together and figure how to be better."

You can read more about the ban and read several interviews with different staff members on FOX 17, Mlive, and the Detroit Free Press.
