This is pretty exciting. The Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM) will begin a brand new program this February called Science Tuesdays. Science Tuesdays will be an ongoing educational experience at the GRPM, offering science programming based on changing themes each month. Science Tuesdays kick off on February 2 with the theme Grand Fish, Grand River.

Science Tuesdays will take place throughout the day every Tuesday at the Museum and include a variety of activities and interactive displays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

February will kick it off with the theme of Grand Fish, Grand River to coordinate with the opening of the Museum’s newest exhibit of the same name. The exhibit, Grand Fish, Grand River explores how the Great Lakes region’s largest and oldest fish, the Lake Sturgeon, once found in great abundance, is now a threatened species in our watersheds. This exhibit also includes two live 10 month old Lake Sturgeon.

Activities in February will include river artifacts, a microscope table with aquatic insects, fossils, rocks and minerals, a watershed mapping activity and an interactive water table.

One Tuesday each month will also feature a guest science speaker in the Museum’s Meijer Theater. The first presentation will take place on Tuesday, February 2 at 6 p.m. with Dr. Stephanie Ogren, the Museum’s Science Educational Manager, and Dr. Marty Holtgren, Fisheries Biologist, Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

February’s Science Tuesdays are held in partnership with Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
