At Last A New and Better Way to Get to Canada From Michigan
Just 85 feet to go!
Just 85 feet after so many fights, arguments, delays, battles, studies, and discussions to a new way to connect us, the USA with Canada.
They have only 85 feet to go and the Gordie Howe International Bridge will be connected from Detroit to Canada. What a milestone!
A VIEW FROM THE TOP
By the way, 85 feet is rather significant I think since it is the exact width of an NHL hockey rink. Not necessarily important in your life but I thought it was a cool stat.
MASSIVE BEAMS FOR THE BRIDGE
MSN.com reported a story from CBS Detroit that the work that finally began in December 2022 is about one month away from completion! Amazing!
David Henderson, CEO of Bridging North America, said about finishing the bridge deck:
"The last section, the closure section, it will be cut to fit. And then partially that has to be adjusted, depending on what the temperature is at the time of the year we actually moved to completion because of the expansion properties of the steel."
It really has been a long, long process with original ideas, studies, and planning between the U.S. and Canada going back to 2005. You don't just throw up some bridge, you know.
THEY ARE ALMOST THERE!
Reddit Michigan reader Warcraft_Fan commented that once connected, the bridge will be .53 miles long between the two towers, the longest main span of any cable-stayed bridge in North America and the 10th longest in the world.
THE RUSSKY BRIDGE
The Russky Bridge in Vladivostok is the world's longest at nearly 3/4 miles long.
GORDIE HOW BRIDGE WORKERS SIGN BEAM
By comparison, he went on to say, that the Mackinac Bridge is a 3800-foot span which is just shy of 3/4 of a mile. The Big Mac is a suspension bridge, not a cable-stayed bridge!
There will actually be six lanes of traffic and it will also allow an area for pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT WILL IT ALL LOOK LIKE WHEN FINISHED?
Once connected, obviously there will be a lot of finish work and testing to do, but they hope to open the bridge in the fall of 2025!
