Today is Go Red For Women day. We are encouraged to wear red to show support for women's heart health. It's a day designed to bring awareness about cardiac disease.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the country, according to the American Heart Association. Cardiovascular disease claims the lives of one in three women. 80% of cardiac events could be prevented through education and lifestyle changes like exercising more, eating better and managing your blood pressure.

The American Heart Association says that 20% of women aren't getting enough exercise. Women’s heart attack symptoms can be quite different and more subtle than those seen in men. Women, for example, can have pain the jaw or back.

Here are the signs and symptoms of a Heart Attack:

  • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  • Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest. It lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back.
  • Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
  • As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort.
