I've been thinking a lot lately about what a great place Grand Rapids and West Michigan is.  We, as a state, and country, have been through the wringer the past two to three years, but all things considered, we're fortunate to be where we are.

Okay, so what you say?  What's so special? I'll tell you.  Now, I''ve tried to narrow it down to my top five landmarks, reasons if you will, for being in Grand Rapids, and believe me, it's tough, so, here goes.

1.     Van Andel Arena - It has been an unbelievable catalist for growth and pride in Grand Rapids.  The arena brings the best in sports, concerts and all sorts of additional reasons for coming downtown for an exciting time.

2.     The John Ball Zoo - Even though limited in space, thanks voters for turning down the millage to grow the zoo, it is a wonderful place for "kids" of all ages.  I was just there this week and always marvel at the beauty and peacefulness of a stroll through the zoo. (Can't wait for all of the animals to come back from their winter break.  Florida must have been great for the Gators.)

3.     Meijer Gardens - Is literally a world-class facility.  With the botanical gardens, sculpture park, summer concert series, and many renouned exhibitions yearly.  The Gardens has drawn people from around the world and always makes us proud.

4.     Lake Michigan - What can I say?  It is our greatest natural resource.  People from Michigan, the United States and the world, visit the Great Lakes and Lake Michigan.  Who doesn't love it.

5.     The Choo-Choo Grill - Okay, I couldn't resist.  I'm telling you, for the best burger in town it has to be the Choo-Choo.  There are, for sure, some supreme burgers in town, but for for my taste, you have to visit the little red building at Leonard and Plainfield, a true landmark, sit at the counter and dive into a little bit of heaven.

There you go, my top 5  Landmarks, places to go, play, relax, eat.  Five great reasons to appreciate Grand Rapids and West Michigan.

I know that I've only scratched the surface, and they're only my choices.  It was hard to narrow it down to 5.  What you think? What would be your Top 5!
