Yesterday's East Coast earthquake sure was a "shocker!"  Seriously, in an area not prone to earthquakes, it really "shook" everybody up.

Okay, I'll stop with the gags.  But, the Virginia quake was a serious event and did register 5.9 on the scale.  Interestingly, we even felt it here, hundreds of miles away.

My wife's office, at the downtown GVSU campus felt it, too.  She ran screaming around her office.....okay.....NOT!  They were concerned, however, and some staff  left the building for a bit.  It certainly was the topic of conversation at a Grand Valley staff party last evening.  And the most asked question was, why did we feel it here?

Lee Van Ameyde of WZZM 13 tracked down Peter Wampler, Associated Professor of Geology at Grand Valley State University to explain why.
