All of us at The River are animal lovers; some of us are more "dog people" and a few are more "cat people."  We all agree that animals are generally smarter than humans give them credit for.

Take this story for example.  It's pretty amazing.

The story is from the Boston area, where "man's best friend" is credited with saving a life.  Her name is Lilly.  She's a pit bull. Lilly pulled her owner's mother away from certain death.

Here's the story from WCVB-TV in Boston:

An engineer of a westward-bound freight train saw a dog pulling a woman away from the tracks in the early hours of May 3 in Shirley. The engineer tried to stop, but couldn't avoid hitting the 8-year-old dog.

The woman, identified as Christine Spain, wasn't hurt, but the train's wheels sliced through Lilly's right foot, fractured her pelvis in multiple locations and caused other internal injuries.

When EMTs arrived at the scene, Lilly was covered in blood but still standing guard over her owner, who had collapsed next to the tracks while walking home from a friend’s house.

The woman's son had adopted Lilly for his mother three years ago in an effort to give his mom some companionship and possibly help reduce her drinking.
