You know that there are some caring and loving people in this world when you hear this heartwarming story. And, it's even better when you find that it is about a local police department.

It was a dark and stormy night, as they say. It really was because it was winter - February 1, this year with temperatures below zero. The conditions were rough.

That was when the Milford, Michigan Police Department got a call about a lost dog. The caller wasn't looking for their lost dog, it was a complaint asking for the police department to do something about this dog wandering about the neighborhood.

They sent a car out to see what the issue was and found the dog. The poor thing was nearly frozen on the porch of a home with no tags and no chip.

The Milford Police Department wrote on their Facebook page:

"After searching the area for an owner, we took him to the station to warm up. During his visit to MPD, we could see he was mild mannered and sweet. Posts on social media didn't yield an owner so we eventually had to turn him over to animal control."

Well, that could have been the end of the story. They had other things to worry about, but not in Milford. This sad looking little dog weighed on their minds.

He, the dog, was in the animal control shelter for about a week. But the police department always kept tabs on him. Is he okay, they would ask? Has anyone claimed him?

He was fine, warmed up, and of course well fed!

But nobody was looking for him. He was alone, the dog nobody wanted.

A week went by and the police department, worried about what might happen to him if he remained unclaimed, did something remarkable and loving.

They adopted him. The Milford Police adopted the dog!

Milford PD named him "Lil" Craig, and now he is a member of the MPD.

Lil Craig has had some medical issues, which were all taken care of. The vet working with Lil Craig told them, "He is about nine years old, missing a few teeth with one ear that won't stand up, and is a little hard of hearing."

Is all of that a big deal. No way the MPD says. As he figures things out, he loves to be around people, can be a real ham, and has the run of his new home, the Milford, Michigan Police Department.

The MPD gives special thanks to Oakland County Animal Control, Premier Pet Supply Milford, and Dr. Carrie Tokar of VCS Milford for helping them make this happen.

MPD says: "We're going to give this old guy the best home we can. His personality is already bringing smiles and some needed stress relief to our staff."

Heartbreaking Discovery: 5 Dogs Rescued from Barn After Years of Neglect

Five neglected dogs were rescued from a barn in Upstate New York during a foreclosure, where they had been living in filthy, inhumane conditions without sunlight, fresh air, or proper care. Believed to be from a former licensed breeder, the dogs are older, unsocialized, and in poor health, now beginning a long road to recovery with the help of rescuers.
