Dessert Wars is a big deal for JK’s Bakehouse & Deli.

It’s such a big deal that JK’s owners, Jodi Rademaker and Kathy Timmer, are closing their Holland shop for the day Thursday to get ready for the Thursday night event at
Amway Grand Plaza hotel’s Ambassador Ballroom in Grand Rapids.

“We’re taking a vacation for Dessert Wars,” Rademaker told “Connie and Curtis.”

JK’s is among about a dozen sweet vendors from Grand Rapids and across West Michigan taking part in Dessert Wars, presented by Channel 95.7 and Hobart Corp. Running 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Amway Grand Plaza, located at 187 Monroe Avenue NW, admission is $8 and children younger than 9 years old are $2 with tickets available at the door. Admission includes 15 sample tickets, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Grand Rapids non-profit Kids’ Food Basket.

Scrumptious desserts, what Rademaker called “Americanized” scones (“more like a biscuit”) and quiche, were the “fabulous desserts” brought as treats for Connie and Curtis to sample during JK’s visit to the show.

For Dessert Wars, JK’s will be dishing up Sweeter Cherve Tiramisu with goat cheese from Zeeland-based Countrywinds Creamery.

JK’s, located at 220 West Eighth Street in Holland, opened last spring with a grand opening in August. The two-person catering operation — Rademaker formerly operated Till Midnight Restaurant and Timmer is a veteran pastry chef — serves up breakfast, lunch, dinner and plenty o’ desserts.
