They came. They saw. They ate.

And it was sweetness they found to sate their sweet appetites and put on their plates -- and cupcake tins, cake boxes and Tupperware containers -- for the third annual Dessert Wars, presented by Channel 95.7 and Hobart Corp. at the Amway Grand Plaza hotel's Ambassador Ballroom in downtown Grand Rapids on Thursday night .

While there were judges' and people's choice competitions, the Dessert Wars 2015 patrons -- throngs, actually -- did not come for those.

They came for the sweets.

Leah Shepherd clutched a cake box of treats flanked by fellow Middleville teen David McMillan as they waited in line for some donuts from Robinette's Apple Haus & Winery.

"We're going to share," Shepherd said. "My mom? She's doing her own thing."

Doing his own thing, too, was Brent Dill. The Grand Rapids man was at Dessert Wars with his girlfriend, Renee, but she was off "prowling" on her own, he said.

He had a quick answer when asked what his favorite dessert was, with a few still on his plate and him readily admitting that "he'd already ate a lot."

"I like the cream horns" from Town to Town Gourmet Pastries, Dill said. "They were good. It was a toss-up between them and Sprinkles Donut Shop."

The judges agreed with Dill, as Town to Town Gourmet Pastries took first place for their choice. Love's Ice Cream & Vegan Gelato was runner-up and Robinette's third in judging.

Joe and Susan Oginsky own Town to Town Gourmet Pastries, with Joe having developed what is now his signature dessert after having failed to find cream horns to his like elsewhere.

In the people's choice category, Robinette's went home with top honors, followed by Sprinkles in the runner-up spot and Twisted Rooster and The Melting Pot of Grand Rapids tied for third.

Robinette's Manager Karey Robinette and her crew brought red velvet, chunky monkey, Black Forest, maple bacon, lime and apple donuts -- along with shots of Robinette’s apple cider.

A portion of Dessert Wars' proceeds go to the Grand Rapids non-profit Kids' Food Basket. Pioneer Sugar; Godwin Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, Hardware and Aqua Systems; New Holland Brewing; and Kitchens by Katie were other prime sponsors.
