There is arguably no more American food than the Cheeseburger. But, It's hard to say exactly where in the US the first Burger was served.

According to SpruceEats, several food historians credit teenaged Lionel Sternberger, who in 1924 decided to slap a slice of American cheese  onto a cooking hamburger at his father's Pasadena, California, sandwich shop, the Rite Spot.

However, my home state of Kentucky claims a Louisville restaurant called Kaelin's invented the cheeseburger in 1934, and another restaurant in Colorado also claims they had the first. While the origins of one of our favorite sandwiches is highly debated, there's one thing that isn't: we love them.

So if you're looking to celebrate National Cheeseburger Day (September 18th) with one of the best that Grand Rapids has to offer- here's arguably the best burgers in the city.

Hall of Fame Burgers

When I try to explain my obsession with Hall of Fame Burger on Eastern, words fail me. They have absolutely perfected the art of the backyard burger, and they serve with the the best seasoned fries and kool aid to make you feel at home.

While they may not make the top of the yelp lists, they are hands down the burger I'd personally take a sword for.

One Twenty Three

Studio Park's bistro has a lot of incredible options, but one you shouldn't sleep on is their smash burger.

If you're the type of person who likes everything a little 'classier' or you want something a little more casual while your friends slam drinks and salads, this burger is a must try.

The Blue Dog

There is something to be said about a perfect pub burger. You're already drinking, it's not like you have to try hard to be impressed, but the folks at the Blue Dog still swing hard for the fences.

If you want to go, but don't drink - don't worry! they offer a non-alcoholic margarita made with red bull that will make you feel like you're dray drinking with your lunch.

Fat Boy Burgers

Let's be honest: the name says it all here.

This burger is big, bold, and full of flavor, and one of the highest rated in the city. If you can't trust a burger from a fat boy, then who can you trust?

Other honorable mentions include: Wahlburger, Choo Choo Grill, and Burger Theory
