I'll have to admit I haven't been in a Walmart store for a long time. It is just a place I don't think about going.

I always thought Walmart was over crowded with merchandise, sloppy in display, and difficult to maneuver. It just wasn't an inviting atmosphere, and if it was my only choice, I would get in and out a quickly as I could.

You can imagine my surprise when I walked into one a couple of weeks ago. My wife Susie and I were in Whitehall and needed something, I've long forgotten what, but Walmart was our only option at the time.

As we walked in I was amazed. I was thinking where am I and what have you done with Walmart. It was open and brighter, wider isles, easy to navigate and find what we needed. Even the food market of the store and re-done pharmacy was cool.

That is what is happening, a store at a time. 14 Michigan stores are due for a total re-do which includes stores in Grand Haven and Muskegon.

What is changing?

First of all, an article on the website Independent.co/uk, Walmart said they are "focusing on spotlighting non-grocery merchandise such as clothing and home goods - just as competitor Target does."

The Independent.co/uk article went on to say "they are using bold and bigger signage, adding new departments and expanding others, and expanding on-line shopping since more and more shoppers are using mobile shopping."

Why all the changes?

Walmart wants to hang on to the higher income shopper that began shopping the stores during the pandemic and still may be looking for a bargain.
