On Monday night, the Cascade Township Planning Commission gave initial approval to plans for a new YMCA.

The new YMCA would be built over 36 acres near Kraft and Burton.

Monday's meeting was one of many steps along the way to final approval of the new YMCA.

A second Planning Commission meeting is planned for June 16, followed by a Township Board vote on July 23.

WZZM has more about Monday's meeting:

The Cascade Township planning commission gave its preliminary approval Monday night for the new facility. The YMCA wants to build on 36 acres near Kraft Avenue and Burton Street. It would replace a smaller Y located on Forest Hills Avenue.

The new facility would include outdoor athletic facilities, a farm, and what is described as a healthy living center.

If all goes well, construction would begin with a month and the new YMCA will open by the fall of 2015.
