UPDATE (8/24/21 11:15AM): The Grand Rapids Police Department has identified the young man found in the Grand River Monday morning as 16-year-old Damontrell Brown of Grand Rapids. An autopsy conducted by the Kent County Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death was accidental drowning. Brown had been missing since the early morning hours of August 21, 2021.

ORIGINAL STORY: Authorities are investigating after a body was pulled from the Grand River in Grand Rapids Monday morning.

According to Wood TV 8, the body was recovered around 8:30a.m. near the west bank of the river, south of Leonard Street.

Police, the Grand Rapids Fire Department, along with the water rescue team, and the GRPD forensics unit are all assisting.

Details have not yet been shared about the identity of the body, or the circumstances leading up to the discovery of the body. Both are pending while an autopsy is performed.
