Before the clouds and the rain brought the gloom back, the Northern part of our state lit up with celestial beams.

The Northern Lights were alive and flickering over Northern Michigan the last few days, and the amateur and professional photographers in our state took to social media to document it.

The Aurora is caused by disturbances in the magnetic field of earth set off by solar wind storms. I don't know how it works beyond, but I know it is a beautiful thing to stumble across.

I saw the Northern Lights a few times in my trips, mainly up north where the light pollution from cities is less. The first time I saw them, back in 1983, I didn't know what they were, and someone had to explain them to this city boy.

Here are some photos and videos of the light show, which many observers said was the best they've ever seen.
