Annual “Turkey Drop” Collects More Than Double The Goal

2020 has been tough on all of us, but it’s not stopping people from being generous and helping each other out.

WOODTV reports that Mel Trotter hosted their annual “Turkey Drop” on Wednesday, and received more than double what they had set for the goal.

The "Turkey Drop" is an event where Mel Trotter Ministries set up three drop-off locations in Grand Rapids to collect turkeys for families in need. They had a drop-off set up at the Mel Trotter location downtown as well as two others, one at Celebration Cinema North and one at the Celebration Cinema South location, where people could come by and drop off turkeys to be donated.

The goal was 2,500 turkeys, which would then be combined with Thanksgiving dinner sides and sent to local food banks for families to pick up to cook their holiday meal at home. By the time this year’s “Turkey Drop” ended, WOODTV says the organization had collected 5,801 turkeys.

It’s not usual for them to collect more than their goal, last year, WOODTV says their goal was 1,600 turkeys, and they ended up with just over 2,000 donated. This year, it’s extra special and needed as COVID-19 has hit families hard financially and Mel Trotter isn’t able to host their huge community banquet at DeVos Place this Thanksgiving, because of the pandemic.
