Amazon Passed on All Three of Its New Pilots, Might Cancel Others
Amazon is undergoing even more overhaul. In addition to its abandonment of the viewer feedback model for new pilots, Amazon has now passed on almost all of its latest shows, and might not renew some critical favorites.
Deadline reports that Amazon has officially passed on comedian Bridget Everett’s new dramedy Love You More, Glenn Close zombie comedy Sea Oak and Diarra Kilpatrick comedy The Climb. All three were greenlit by former Amazon Studios head Roy Price and comedy/drama head Joe Lewis, both of whom exited the company over sexual harassment scandals.
Still reportedly in contention are Upload, a single-camera comedy from The Office creator Greg Daniels, and the multi-camera Making Friends, from How I Met Your Mother bosses Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Deadline also reports that no decision has been made about the future of Tig Notaro’s One Mississippi, or Jill Soloway’s I Love Dick. Transparent remains in limbo as well, given the scandal surrounding star Jeffrey Tambor.
Amazon has increasingly utilized straight-to-series orders like Jack Ryan, Carnival Row and Lord of the Rings in their search for a broader hit. The Weinstein scandals further complicated matters, as David O. Russell’s Robert De Niro drama cut ties with The Weinstein Company and was ultimately scrapped. Matt Weiner’s The Romanoffs continues production, despite initial Weinstein funding and Weiner’s own scandals, but also comes with a hefty price tag. Given what they spent on Lord of the Rings, it might make sense why Amazon scaled back its pilot investments.
All three pilots are at least available to stream on Amazon, and you can check out the trailer below.
