It's time for morel mushroom hunting in Michigan!

The mushrooms will be found across Michigan in the weeks to come and that includes many spots in West Michigan!

Morel mushrooms often grow in places where there has been a wildfire or a prescribed burn.

The Michigan DNR is helping morel mushroom hunters with a map of every location in Michigan where there was a fire of 10 acres or more in 2017. You'll find locations all over the state including Allegan, Barry, Montcalm and Newaygo counties.

Allegan County has the highest number of locations in West Michigan. The map shows Allegan County with 11 spots that have had either a prescribed burn or a wildfire ranging from 10 - 146 acres. Barry County is home to West Michigan's largest morel mushroom hunting area with a single prescribed burn covering 640 acres.

Morel mushroom hunting tips:

  • You are most likely to find morel mushrooms in places where jack, white or red pine once grew.
  • Mushrooms like shade, so grassy or open areas with sunlight are less likely to contain morel mushrooms.
  • Visit probable morel mushroom locations early and often. There can be a lot of competition to find them.
  • Learn how to properly identify morel mushrooms.
