2014 FIFA World Cup: U.S. Loses 1-0 to Germany, But Still Advances
Germany defeated the United States 1-0 in today's highly-anticipated World Cup match in a rain-soaked Recife, Brazil.
Despite the loss, the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team defied many expectations by holding its own in the so-called Group of Death and advanced to the knockout stage due to goal differential with Portugal.
It marks the first time the American team has advanced to the knockout stage -- or Sweet 16 -- in consecutive World Cups.
Germany won the group, with Portugal defeating Ghana 2-1 today.
Thomas Mueller provided the lone scoring in the 55th minute off a shot that came following a missed opportunity in a set piece.
The U.S. next plays Tuesday, facing off against the Group H winner, which will most likely be Belgium.
