It looks like another nice weekend in West Michigan. We have a variety of outdoor and indoor events. Several sporting events...from baseball, to boxing, disc golf, to auto racing. It is also  the final weekend to see the Butterflies are Blooming exhibit. There will be tree planting, gardening, recycling, and even a White Elephant Sale. There is also a couple of opportunities to get rid of the unwanted drugs you may have.

Some activities include the kids, while others are more for the adults.

    The annual Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming exhibition at Meijer Gardens is the largest temporary tropical butterfly exhibition in the nation. Tropical butterflies from around the world fly freely in the Tropical Conservatory in March and April. Throughout the exhibition, there is special educational programming and the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden offers butterfly-themed activities.

    You're invited to participate in the 3rd Annual Mayor’s Greening Initiative, hosted by Mayor Bliss, Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, and the City’s Forestry Department! The Mayors Greening Initiative brings together community and corporate volunteers to plant hundreds of trees around the City of Grand Rapids during Arbor Week, April 22-28. This initiative gives the communities and individuals of Grand Rapids a chance to participate in bringing Grand Rapids closer to the City’s master plan goal of 40%t tree canopy cover.

    Friday from 6–7 pm, they will be giving away 100 five gallon trees to Grand Rapids residents at Sullivan Field.  Trees are sponsored by Bartlett Tree Experts and are available on a first come, first serve basis so get there early!

    Saturday at Sullivan Field there will be a community tree planting from 9 am-12 pm. This year’s one-day community tree planting will take place in the neighborhoods near Sullivan Field and Stocking Elementary on the city’s West Side. followed by a lunchtime celebration of Arbor Week from 12:30-3:00 pm.

    Michigan Golden Gloves Presents the West Michigan Championship at The DeltaPlex Arena on Saturday. Doors are scheduled to open at 6:00 pm, Fights begin at 7:00 pm. Amateur female and male boxers of all ages boxing to become the West Michigan Champions. Open female and male boxers move on to the National Golden Gloves in Omaha, Nebraska.

There is an optional $5 50/50 and an optional $5 Ace Pool. If nobody hits an ace during play we will hold a ctp throw to determine a winner.

    Gardening 101

    If you would like to start a garden, but aren’t sure where to begin, this is the workshop for you! They will go over the square garden spacing technique, address common plant diseases and pests and how to manage them, and have a Q and A session where you can ask questions specific to your space. Participants will leave the workshop with a garden plan, and will have the opportunity to glean some seeds leftover from last year’s farm production. Please come to the workshop with the dimensions of your garden space, raised beds, or patio containers. If you don’t have a garden space already made, please come with your projected dimensions.

    Spectrum Health, The Grand Rapids Police Department, and Families Against Narcotics are partnering to host this collection site along with Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker. Drop off ANY unused drugs you may have in your home this Saturday! (There will also be a Drug Take Back Day in East Grand Rapids. Bring your unused prescription drugs to the Public Safety Department, 770 Lakeside Drive, in East Grand Rapids for safe disposal from 10:00 am-2:00 pm.)

    Community Recycling

    This is a great recycling opportunity for the whole community. They will be accepting paper for their Paper Gator, including newsprint, damaged hard and soft cover books, shredded paper, and wrapping paper (nonmetallic). NO paperboard or cardboard  They are also accepting paint -- both usable and non-usable. All usable paint will be used to do an art project at the middle and high school -- the rest will be sent for proper disposal. They will also be accepting metal recycling, which is also a fundraising opportunity.
