Ah, Spring.  Green grass, golf, flowers, Lake Michigan, boating, swimming...and...Baseball!

Take me out to the ballgame with the West Michigan Whitecaps.  It really is American's game, and an evening at 5th/3rd is an evening well spent.Especially when food is mentioned.  I'm telling you, the hot dogs taste better, popcorn is fresher, peanuts are yummy, all because you're at the ballpark.

And the Whitecaps keep on top of all the delicious food they serve, too.  Each year they add some new things, many of which get voted on by fans so that the Caps organization can make sure they're serving 'fan favorites.'

As a matter of fact, they just announced that the winning item in their third annual food contest is the Westside Po' Boy, a loaded Kielbasa sandwich.

More than 150 menu items were suggested by fans.  The Westside Po' Boy was one of ten items then voted on online.  The Westside Po' Boy won with 18% of the vote.

The Polish sandwich is kielbasa, pierogies and sauerkraut smothered in marinara sauce and loaded on a hoagie roll.

The Whitecaps are also adding meat and vegan pasties to this year's menu as a seasonal item, during April and May.  The pasties had come in second with 17% of the vote.

But, that's not all.  There are other items new to Fifth Third Ballpark this year.  You'll find:
Movie Theater Candy (Sour Patch Kids, Skittles, Starburst, Airheads, M&Ms, Peanut M&Ms, Mike and Ikes, Milk Duds, Nerds, Reese's Pieces, Butterfinger Pieces, Whoppers, Airhead Extremes and Sour Gummy Worms). Giant Turkey Leg (1.5 pound giant smoked turkey legs from Michigan Turkey Producers). Chicken Sluggers (BBQ Marinated grilled chicken drumsticks). Pierogies (deep fried potato and cheese-filled pasta) Pickle Chips (deep fried battered butter pickle chips); a very popular fan menu suggestion. Gluten Free Hot Dogs with gluten free buns - another item widely suggested by fans. Salsalita Chips (Round tortillas made with salsa). Egglands Best Deviled Eggs (available on suite level only). Lobster Roll (New England style lobster blend served cold on a brioche bun) (available on suite level only). Half rack of Ribs (Billy Bones smoked St. Louis style ribs) (available on suite level only).

The home season opens on Monday, April 9 against the Bowling Green Hot Rods at 6 pm. Season, group and individual game tickets are now on sale and can be purchased by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or by visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com .
