Every fall, Heart of West Michigan United Way collects elementary school supplies for children in the Schools of Hope Reading Program of Grand Rapids Public Schools, to make sure the students are starting the school year ready to learn. In 2015, 11,596 items with a total value of $15,765 were collected!

Thanks to a partnership with Amway Corporation, Grand Rapids Public Schools is working with Innovations for Learning to implement TutorMate in the district to improve literacy of students in 2nd grade. TutorMate is the nation’s preeminent online volunteer tutoring program, helping tens of thousands of students in low income communities learn to read.

City High Middle School Ranked #3 in the State by U.S. News & World Report

More honors are coming Grand Rapids Public Schools way, this time from U.S. News and World Report.

In February, I reported that Grand Rapids Public Schools City High Middle School has been ranked the #1 high school in the state on Bridge Magazine’s list of “2015 High School Academic State Champs”.

Now, City High Middle school has been ranked the #3 high school in the state of Michigan by U.S. News and World Report. It is the #1 high school in West Michigan and #47 in the nation, according to the report.

It began as a conversation three years ago between a local company and officials from Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS). And, it sparked a unique partnership that the school district says serves as an inspiration for other businesses to get involved in enlightening inner city school children. And, the result of the meeting between Open Systems Technologies (OST) and GRPS?  Eleven field trips this Spring to Lake Michigan’s Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon and Rosy Mound Natural Area in Grand Haven for nearly 700 fifth graders from 9 GRPS schools.

Barry Manilow Wants Your New or Gently Used Musical Instrument for GRPS Students

Legendary singer-songwriter Barry Manilow hopes others will once again follow his philanthropic lead as he brings his Manilow Music Project to the Grand Rapids Public Schools Manilow plans to donate a Yamaha piano to launch a local music instrument drive. Anyone who donates a new or gently used musical instrument prior to show date will receive 2 free tickets (valid for pre-selected seat locations on a first come first serve basis) for Manilow’s show this Friday, March 25th.
