The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says Sunday’s opening day of the firearm deer hunting season was improved in some parts of the Upper Peninsula over last year.

It isn't quite yet firearm deer season, but we think maybe this deer was looking for a place to hide before this weekend. A 13-point buck wandered into Star Collision CARSTAR on Plainfield Ave. near Leonard St. Tuesday afternoon.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has issued a report on the 2014 hunting seasons. It says that roughly 615,000 hunters statewide harvested a total of approximately 329,000 deer. That's a drop of 15 percent from 2013.

Last week, the Michigan departments of Natural Resources (DNR) and Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) confirmed a second free-ranging deer in Ingham County has tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD), a fatal neurological disease that affects white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk and moose.

Michigan's first cases of avian flu and West Nile virus were confirmed in early June. Chronic wasting disease was discovered in free-ranging deer in Michigan at the end of May. The Michigan DNR and others are working to stop the spread of all three.

Landowners can earn up to $25 per acre through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Hunting Access Program. The program provides private-land hunting opportunities in southern Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula.

The Michigan DNR reports that Michigan recorded no fatalities during all hunting seasons in 2014. It is the first time no fatalities have been recorded over an entire year of hunting in Michigan. Ten hunting incidents involving injuries were recorded in Michigan in 2014. Nine in the Lower Peninsula and one in the Upper Peninsula.
