The number of homes built in Michigan in 2014 is projected to be the highest since 2006. Consumers Energy has expanded its workforce and made other changes to keep pace with demand.

Consumers Energy has selected a total of 22 businesses and homeowners in Michigan's Lower Peninsula to help produce solar energy. Three Kent and Ottawa county businesses were among those selected.

Consumers Energy is expected to cut power at 9 p.m. to allow crews to repair damage from Sunday night's thunderstorms.

West Michigan made it through last night's storms without too much damage. Some other areas of the state were not as fortunate. The storms had winds of over 70 mph and have left over 150,000 without power.

A semi truck crashed into an electrical pole at a Grand Rapids intersection and knocked out power to buildings throughout the downtown area Tuesday morning. The crash happened at around 10:30 a.m. at Michigan Street and Diamond Avenue.

Consumers Energy crews continued to work to restore power this morning in West Michigan and across the state.

While the calendar might indicate spring, the National Weather Service's Grand Rapids Office this afternoon issued a winter weather advisory for Thursday and Friday. A pair of late-season winter storms are bringing freezing rain and gusty winds early Thursday and again early Friday to Grand Rapids and West Michigan.

Saturday afternoon update: Restoration work continues for Consumers Energy customers impacted by last weekend’s devastating ice storm and those affected by ice melting off trees and equipment from Friday’s and today’s warmer weather. Despite some extra efforts, Christmas is a powerless holiday for many in greater Grand Rapids and across West Michigan because of snow, cold and the lingering effects of a weekend ice storm, officials said Tuesday. More than 152,000 electricity customers of Consumers Energy were without power headed into Tuesday evening.
