The birth of Prince George Alexander Louis has been big news across the globe, including the United States.

But will that popularity lead to more baby George’s in the United States?

The world waited, then celebrated the announcement of the birth of a royal baby boy!

Then the world waited, and waited, and waited, then celebrated the naming of the royal baby boy: George Alexander Louis.

George Alexander Louis is a popular little guy, but will that lead to more baby George’s in the United States and Michigan?

Let’s compare to the births of Prince William and Prince Harry.

Prince William was born on June 21, 1982.

  • 1981 – 15th
  • 1982 – 15th
  • 1983 – 16th

Michigan ranking of newborns with the name William.

  • 1981 – 19th, 888 total
  • 1982 – 23rd, 809 total
  • 1983 – 21st, 822 total

Prince Harry was born on September 15, 1984.

  • 1985 – 268

  • 1983 – not in the top 100
  • 1984 – not in the top 100
  • 1985 – not in the top 100

Prince Harry’s given name is Henry, so let’s check the popularity of Henry too.

  • 1983 – 136
  • 1984 – 135
  • 1985 – 137

Michigan ranking of newborns with the name Henry.

  • 1983 – not in the top 100
  • 1984 – not in the top 100
  • 1985 – not in the top 100

In 1983 – 1985 just 100 boys named Henry or Harry would have put either name among the top 100 most popular in Michigan.

What about George?

George ranked as the 166th most popular newborn boy name in the United States in 2012.  It’s popularity has been pretty steady around that mark over the last 4 years. George did not rank in the top 100 in Michigan in 2012.

Comparing to previous years, it seems that the birth of Prince George will have little to no effect on the popularity of the name in the United States or Michigan.
