‘Kick-Ass’ Director Matthew Vaughn Says Audiences “Have Had Enough” of Dark Superhero Movies

As ‘Batman’ goes, so goes comic-book movies. When Tim Burton turned the Dark Knight into a retro-gothic hero, Hollywood followed suit with a slew of heavily stylized pulp throwbacks. (See: ‘Dick Tracy,’ ‘The Phantom,’ ‘The Shadow,’ etc.) And when Christopher Nolan turned the Dark Knight into, well, ‘The Dark Knight,’ it sparked a wave of “grim and gritty” movies, with serious superheroes doing and saying serious things in outrageous spandex costumes that had been reimagined as biker gear or body armor. (See: ‘Man of Steel’ [Or maybe don’t.]) There’s been some pushback, but we’re really only now coming out of the trend toward ultra-serious, uber-dark comic-book movies.

New Movies (This Week): ‘American Sniper,’ ‘Big Eyes,’ ‘The Interview,’ ‘Into The Woods,’ ‘Selma’ and ‘Unbroken’ [Video]

This is the week when "The Interview" was going to be released, but some hackers infiltrated Sony Pictures Entertainment's computers, made some threats and got the farce about an assassination plot against North Korean leader Kim Jong-un by two American journalists -- starring Seth Rogen and James Franco -- canceled.

Well, actually, Sony Pictures Entertainment now says it is going to release "The Interview" in limited theatrical release on Dec. 25. Whatever.

Either way, there are still plenty of other films coming out on Christmas Day (Thursday): about a Navy S.E.A.L. sniper, a painter who ran into legal troubles and rediscovered herself, a witch involved with characters from children's stories, the civil rights marches of the 1960s and a U.S. Olympian captured by the Japanese during World War II

As expected, ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ won the weekend, but a quick examination of the actual numbers makes this victory feel just a little hollow. The same goes for ‘Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb’ and ‘Annie,’ both of which took second and third place without putting forward particularly impressive numbers. Yep, the holiday box office looked just a little rough this weekend.
