The Kent County Medical Examiner has determined that a Grandville High School senior and star athlete died from complications of an enlarged heart. 17-year-old Ryan Fischer died in his sleep Thursday night.

Fisher, a three-sport athlete and member of the MHSAA's Student Advisory Council, was co-captain of Grandville's hockey team and was set to play with them tonight at Compuware Arena in Plymouth in the Division 1 semifinal against Novi Detroit Catholic Central.

Fischer also was to receive an MHSAA Class A Scholar-Athlete Award later this month. He recently had been accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he planned to study aerospace engineering.

Fischer would have turned 18 on April 10. He also was captain of the Grandville football team this fall and had lettered in baseball.

A decision to play tonight's hockey game as scheduled was made after conversations between Fischer's family and Grandville's administration.

The MHSAA has announced that they will stream the game for free at MHSAA.TV starting at 7:30pm.

The Grand Rapids Griffins have announced that they will observe a moment of silence in honor of Ryan Fischer prior to Friday night's game against the Iowa Wild.
