If you have to go to a hospital for any reason you probably consider it a safe place to be and will come out of there better than when you went in, right?

Did you know, truth be known, not all hospitals are are alike, with some actually getting failing grades for patient safety.

If a hospital stay is in your future you probably will be where your health insurance says you have to go, or your primary care physician send you.

But, you should be your own advocate and check out what is a safe place or not safe place. It's important!

HOW DO YOU DO THAT?

Researching a hospital may seem like a tough task, but it is actually easier than you think. You can use THE LEAPFROG HOSPITAL SAFETY GUIDE!

Your enter the state and you'll get grades A through F and the reasons behind those grades.

Sister station FMX94.5 says:

"These grades are achieved as Leapfrog looks at, including Infections, Problems With Surgery, Safety Problems, Practices to Prevent Errors, and Doctors, Nurses & Hospital Staff. Each category is further divided into more areas, so you can really drill down if you want to."

Sadly, two Michigan hospitals did receive an F grade, and you don't want to go there.

Two Michigan hospitals received D grades for patient safety, too, and they have a lot of work ahead of them.

DMC Harper University Hospital and ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital, are one step away from an F grade and probably not good places to go.

WHAT ABOUT WEST MICHIGAN HOSPITALS? Are we safe?

University of Michigan Health - West, Trinity Health Muskegon, Trinity Health Grand Haven, and several more around Michigan, received a C grade patient safety rating.

Yes, better than a D and F, but according to the safety guide, they have several things to improve on.

West Michigan Hospital that receive a B rating were:

Many other Michigan hospitals also received a B rating.

Only two West Michigan got an A rating. One was Trinity Health - St. Mary's Grand Rapids,

and Corewell Health Zeeland Hospital

Other West Michigan Corewell hospitals had incomplete scores so I couldn't report them.

All in all, we should feel pretty safe and proud of our West Michigan health care. But, make sure to be your own advocate and if you are not feeling safe, speak up!
