There's no worse scenario than waking up in the middle of the night to a fire. You're disoriented, you're scared, and you have little to no time to react to save yourself, your loved ones, and anything you can grab within arms reach.

But what do you grab? Pictures? Pets? Valuables? That was the question many faced this morning.

But residents of a Standale apartment complex are thankful to be alive after their neighbors jumped to the rescue to alert them of a fire after a faulty alarm failed to warn them.

Rescue crews were called to Westtown Apartments (at the corner of Lake Michigan and Wilson) at 4am where they found the entire roof of one of the units engulfed in flames. Thankfully, there were no injuries after 3 buildings were evacuated, but it was thanks to the quick thinking of several residents that others were warned.

The fire alarms and sprinkler systems failed in the building where the original fire started, and once residents realized was happening, they attempted to pull the fire alarm to warn other residents, which also failed. That's when those residents leaped into action to help save others, they got into their cars and started to honk their horns to warn others that there was danger.

One video posted from a resident in another building shows the fire burning without alarms going off.

One resident gave their account on reddit

Our dog woke us up twice around 4am. I could hear people moving about the building, so I got up to see what was happening. when I looked out back everything was orange. I leaned outside and saw the fire raging and the fighters were  already on scene. The alarm began sounding a few minutes later. Then the cops appeared.

So glad everyone is okay. It’s good to know there are neighbors looking out for each other here. THANK YOU

While no injuries are reported, the building is likely a total loss. Red Cross is on scene as of 6am to help residents who are displaced. Many are thankful for the actions of others who made sure they made it out safe and alive.
