As we make our way out of the winter of 2024 we enter construction season in Michigan. A major road rebuilding project in the Lansing area will make easy access to Michigan State University and East Lansing difficult all year.

The Michigan State Department of Transportation will be working on a rebuild of US-127 and Interstate 496 throughout the year. The two highways come together on the southeast side of Lansing and run concurrently near the Lansing-East Lansing border.

The area becomes a real chokepoint for the region's traffic during rush hours.

Running from March to November in 2024, northbound US 127 will completely close. Two main access points to Michigan State's campus, Dunckel and Trowbridge Roads, will see their exits closed through much of this construction.

After the northbound lanes reopen for 2025, the soundbound portion of US 127 closes in 2025.

Expect traffic to increase on roads like Kalamazoo Street, Michigan Avenue (M-143 in East Lansing) and Grand River Avenue (M-43) as alternate routes to Trowbridge.

Further north of the Dunckel/Trowbridge stretch, US-127 will see more rebuilding in the cooridor from Saginaw Street to Lake Lansing Road and I-69 trough 2026.

This project follows other recent construction that saw I-496 overhauled through downtown Lansing.
