This is pretty darn special. Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital has been recognized as the #1 hospital for cardiac surgery in the State of Michigan!

If that is not enough, Healthgrades has ranked Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital as one of America's 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery, and, this is the third year in a row for that recoginition!

You may ask who or what is Healthgrades? They are an independent organization that analyzes health care data and ranks heart surgery programs on a state and national level. The award recognizes superior clinical outcomes in heart bypass surgery and heart valve surgery.

Are they excited by the latest report? Dr. John Heiser, Spectrum Health Medical Group division chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery sure is.

“We are very proud of our long track record of providing high quality cardiac surgery care to the community of West Michigan. This award is especially meaningful because it is independent recognition of our exceptional outcomes when compared to other programs in the state and the nation.”

It's a bit complicated, but in simple terms, most of the hospitals evaluated by Healthgrades fall into the category of community heart surgery programs. But, Butterworth Hospital and the Spectrum Health Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center offer a 4-pronged program, including all the care available at a community program in addition to specific diagnostic and therapeutic services for comprehensive heart care,  heart and lung transplantation, robotic heart surgery, catheter-based valve replacement, artificial heart pumps and cardiothoracic critical care.

I'm lost already, but I know that I feel so much better knowing that if I ever do need cardiac care I don't have to travel any farther than Michigan Avenue here in Grand Rapids and the Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center.

Pretty reassuring isn't it!
