Three Area Girls Basketball Teams Advance To State Quarterfinals
Rockford, West Catholic and Kent City punched their tickets to the Elite Eight in their respective divisions.
Rockford Gets Sweet Revenge Against Longtime Nemesis
Rockford, in Division 1, knocked off Hudsonville 54-32 to win the Region 3 title at Byron Center High School. The win avenged the Rams only two regular season losses, both at the hands of the Eagles in OK Red Conference play. It was also the first win in seven games for the Rams over the Eagles.
The Rams used a suffocating defense to limit Hudsonville to just 11 halftime points, and the Eagles never could never get within 12 points the rest of the away, as the Rams coasted to the title.
After the game, Elle Irwin of Rockford told FOX 17's Brett Bakita, "This was huge, our program hasn't done this (won a regional) in a long time."
Rockford will face East Lansing in the quarterfinals Tuesday night at Calvin University's Van Noord Arena, tip off is at 7:00pm.
West Catholic's Pressure Defense Continues To Wear Down Foes
In Division 2, West Catholic's Falcons waltzed Newaygo 55-29 at Orchard View to take Region 11. University of Toledo bound senior Cadence Dykstra paced the Falcons with 17 points. Once again, it was defense that told the tale in this one, with the Falcons full court pressure holding the Lions to just 7 first half points.
West Catholic moves on to Wayland Tuesday night, where they'll take on the Edwardsburg Eddies in the D2 quarters. The Falcons are now 23-1 on the season.
Kent City Remains Perfect
Kent City advanced in Division 3, eliminating Covenant Christian 46-32 at NorthPointe Christian. Lexie Bowers had 23 points to pace the Eagles, while Madelyn Geers added 16.
Kent City, who is now undefeated at 24-0, will take on 23-1 Schoolcraft Tuesday at Edwardsburg, with the winner advancing to the state semi-finals at MSU's Breslin Center next Thursday.
