Last week, the Michigan Community Service Commission announced the 28 winners of the 2016 Governor's Service Awards. A Spring Lake resident won the Youth Volunteer of the Year Award, a Holland resident won the Senior Volunteer of the Year Award and a Grand Rapids company was given the Outstanding National Service Program Award.

Ottawa County, Spring Lake, Wayland and Wyoming were among 16 municipalities receiving more than $6.6 million to offset local government costs associated with mergers, consolidations, inter-local agreements, and cooperative efforts among municipalities, authorities, and school districts.

A successful weekend for West Michigan student-athletes as boys tennis and girls golf champions were crowned. There were a number of strong finishes from West Michigan schools including championship wins by Forest Hills Central Boys Tennis and from East Kentwood and Spring Lake Girls Golf teams.

The Department of Natural Resources is planning a prescribed burn on the Grand River in Spring Lake Township sometime this summer or early fall.
