The Detroit Lions announced Tuesday morning that star wide receiver Calvin Johnson is retiring from the NFL.

Sources say that Johnson told Lions' Coach Jim Caldwell the day after their final regular season game that he would not be returning in 2016.

Today, Calvin Johnson and the Detroit Lions issued a statement in which Johnson says he is "currently evaluating options for my future." The statement suggests that retirement could be on the way for Johnson. After nine record-setting years in the NFL, Johnson is entitled to take his career in whatever direction he'd like, but I'm here to plead for one more season.

“Like many players at this stage of their career, I am currently evaluating options for my future,” Johnson said in a statement released by the Lions Wednesday afternoon.
