Some ‘Star Wars: Episode 7’ Spoilers Are True, Says J.J. Abrams
Star Wars: Episode 7 spoilers are a dime a dozen on the internet. The hard part is, it's difficult to determine whether any of those spoilers are actually true, or just the product of overactive imaginations. Director J.J. Abrams, himself a fierce protector of spoilers, confirmed that some of the rumors you're reading online are actually true.
Abrams was in Los Angeles yesterday hosting the Irish Oscar Wilde Awards where Star Wars: Episode 7 star Carrie Fisher was accepting an award. Just a few days ago some major Star Wars spoilers appeared online (we wont repeat them here, but if must know, they're not hard to find) that threatened to ruin a very important and significant part of the film. The BBC caught up with Abrams and asked him about the leaks and the director was surprisingly forthcoming:
We did the best we can to preserve the story for the audience, but it doesn't always work. There are a ton of rumors — some true, some false. But I'm grateful for everyone who would want to read a spoiler because it means that they care and want to see the movie. I know what it feels like, as an enormous Star Wars fan myself.
It's nice to see Abrams slowly start to realize that, try as he might, he just can't control all the leaks all the time. From LOST to Star Trek, he's worked very hard to keep his productions secret, but Star Wars is bigger than all of that and the passion and undying thirst for knowledge is so strong, that to get upset about it is a fool's errand. We never thought we'd see the day when J.J. Abrams admits he's grateful for people who read spoilers, but here we are.
Despite Abrams admitting that some Star Wars: Episode 7 spoilers are true, we still don't really know what is what. Even with things coming from supposed “trusted sources”, Abrams has admitted to using a disinformation campaign, so people who would be in the position to know are leaking things that aren't true to throw people off the course. So, even as we get confirmation that, yes, some of the spoilers are true, some of them are still not true. And, maybe J.J. Abrams is lying about them being true to completely throw us off the scent. And, now we don't know whether we're coming or going.
Star Wars: Episode 7 opens in theaters on December 18, whether you know its secrets or not.
