This Amazing 95-Year Old Spot is Still a Top Tourist Attraction in Michigan!
After all the years I have lived in Michigan, more than 50, I finally got to visit and do something I had never done before.
I have been all over the state, Detroit, Lansing, Kalamazoo, Traverse City, Mackinac Island, Lake Michigan, many inland lakes. I've fished, played golf, ridden crazy amusement park rides, built sand castles, gone horseback riding, dined on hot dogs, eaten in four star restaurants, gone to Tiger, Lions and Red Wings games, been to many killer concerts, the symphony, opera, ballet, Broadway shows, but, for whatever reason, never done this one thing.
I had never ridden the sand dunes of Lake Michigan at Mac Wood's Dune Rides of Silver Lake. That is until yesterday, Monday, August 5. How could I have missed this! So much fun!
It's not as if I hadn't thought about it, but just never did it, and that was my loss.
Mac Dune Rides is steeped in Michigan history beginning in 1930.
There really was a Mac Wood, pictured here in one of his first "dune scooters." He was taking people for rides over the dunes for fun when friends suggested this should be more than just a fun thing to do and should be a business. Not one to say can't do, Mac did it! And the rest his history.
The Mac Wood's Dune Rides website says their first official dune scooter was "designed from a Model A Ford and carried 4 passengers."
How much did it cost for a ride back then? A whopping .25 cents!
My wife, Susie, and grandson Silas and I took the ride and had so much fun through the dunes and along Lake Michigan.

They don't ride through the water anymore. Susie said it was a blast, a wet blast! Too much liability today I guess, but Susie and Silas had fun in the lake!
I think this is a bucket list, must do, for anyone before the season ends.
What a great end of a Lake Michigan weekend. Until next time!
