Showtime’s Twin Peaks revival has frustrated anxious fans with some initial hiccups or an ever-uncertain schedule, and like the series itself, only more mystery lies in store. The network thinks they have Twin Peaks down to a mid-2017 premiere, but David Lynch’s “fluid” process makes an exact episode count difficult to pin down.

The threadbare comments came from Showtime boss David Nevins at the TCA press tour panel, as the network head suggested the series would return in first half of 2017, most likely June. Production has at least wrapped, with creator David Lynch “deep in the editing process,” though one that makes it difficult to determine exactly how many episodes we’ll end up with. Lynch and writer Mark Frost only handed in two scripts, with a binder of musings and ideas forming a general outline for the rest of the season.

No official footage was shown, while Nevins offered cryptic remarks on a potential release strategy (via IndieWire):

Everything about ‘Twin Peaks’ is going to be unconventional — unconventional in the handling of it, unconventional in how we market it. I really want to embrace the unusualness of it. I think it is quite possible that we’re not going to do a traditional release pattern. I don’t know what exactly that means. I’ve had a couple conversations with David, but I kind of want to embrace the unexpectedness of it. I can definitely see longer episodes or … It’s a question of how do we release it linearly? How do we release it for people who want to stream it? There may be a difference between the two.

Its premiere previously eyed for spring 2017, new cast includes the likes of Monica Bellucci, Michael Cera, Tim Roth, Ghostbusters alum Ernie Hudson, Walking Dead star Josh McDermitt, and musicians like Trent Reznor and Eddie Vedder, while the full listing lies below:

Twin Peaks composer Angelo Badalamenti’s return is also set, alongside stars Madchen Amick, Dana Ashbrook, Sheryl Lee, Michael Horse, Sherilyn Fenn, Miguel Ferrer, David Patrick Kelly, Richard Beymer and fellow new additions Ashley Judd, James Belushi, Naomi Watts, Tom Sizemore, Laura Dern, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Peter Sarsgaard, Robert Knepper, Amanda Seyfried and Balthazar Getty.

The original Twin Peaks saw Agent Dale Cooper arriving in the titular town to investigate the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer, only to find the mystery ran far deeper than he could ever expect, with a touch of the supernatural. The new iteration will pick up 25 years after the Season 2 finale in 1991, which saw MacLachlan’s Agent Cooper in a Black Lodge limbo.

Showtime may come forth with additional Twin Peaks details for 2017 soon, but who, what, where, why and when specifically should we hope for?
