It was a mere ten years ago that Gary Vanderstelt, after many years spent as a baker, had a dream. His dream was to own a special donut shop. That dream came true. And, as the years past, that donut shop dream continued to grow with the help of Gary Vanderstelt, Jr. And, in only ten years, which is a pretty short time, Gary’s dream has grown to six locations with a seventh set to open soon. That "delicious" business, as so many know in West Michigan, is Sprinkles!

Very proudly, the Vanderstelt family just open on Leonard and Fuller this Saturday and it's their first in Grand Rapids. Now, not only are they in Grand Rapids, but Ada, Caledonia, Rockford, Allendale, and of course, the original shop in Hudsonville.

WZZM reported that the Saturday open in Grand Rapids was spectacular, too. Owner Gary VanderStelt Jr. said he wasn’t expecting a crowd. But when he arrived after pulling an all-nighter making doughnuts, he was shocked to find a long line that remained during the entire three hour grand opening event.

Gary Jr. surprisingly said baking and make donuts was the farthest thing from his mind when he was younger. No way was he going to do that because he hated working in his father’s bakery. Gary Sr. was a veteran baker who worked at Buttercup Bakery, the Pantlind Hotel and Boersma’s before founding Goober’s Bakery which led eventually to Sprinkles.

However, things changed, as the always do, and he joined the business.
They only worked together less than a year before VanderStelt Sr. passed from pancreatic cancer.

The business continues to expand, with more locations planned with the next project on the horizon, a location in Norton Shores set to open in March. The site used to be VanderStelt Sr.'s bakery back in the '90s.

Congratulations, Gary – your father would be proud!
