Allegan County Sheriff’s Department and school officials at Wayland Union Schools are reminding parents to freshen up on stranger danger conversations with your kids after a middle school student was approached at their bus stop Monday morning.

Fox 17 says the student was standing at their bus stop when a person stopped and tried to lure them to a vehicle nearby.  The student refused to go to the vehicle and told the bus driver once they were picked up.  School officials then called the police and reported the incident.

The student is safe and sound, according to Fox 17, and a letter went out to parents and staff from the school’s superintendent regarding the incident this afternoon.

Fox 17 reports school officials and police are reminding parents to discuss “Stranger Danger” and reporting suspicious activity.

I did a quick Google search as a reminder of what all you teach with  “Stranger Danger” and found a lot of good information from a Flint-area school website.  The idea of "Stranger Danger" is staying more than an arm’s length from strangers.  Not taking anything from strangers and not going somewhere with a stranger. It’s also about letting a trusted adult know immediately when something strange happens.

Probably the best advice from the Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools website is also WHAT TO DO if someone tries to take you,

If a stranger grabs you, do everything you can to stop him or her from pulling you away.  Drop to the ground, kick, hit, bite, and scream.  Do whatever it takes to attract the attention of others who can help you.  If someone is dragging you away, scream, “this is not my dad,” or “this is not my mom.”
