Newaygo Co. Deer Found to Have Chronic Wasting Disease

Newaygo County hunters alert, 3 deer from a farm have tested positive for chronic wasting disease.

According to WOOD, that scientists for the state of Michigan were doing routine testing of CWD and while testing deer that were raised on a farm in Newaygo County, there were 3 white tails that tested positive for the disease.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development routinely test deer that are raised on farm's all across the state.

So far the good news is, no free ranging deer in Newaygo County have tested positive for CWD. There is a separate investigation that has been put in place to make sure no other farm deer test positive for the disease.

Since 2008, the Newaygo County farm is the fifth in Michigan to test positive for CWD. Other privately owned farms where the disease has been found were located in Kent, Mecosta and Montcalm counties.

If you are unfamiliar with what chronic wasting disease is, it is a neurological disorder that affects white tailed deer, elk, moose and even mule deer.
