Michigan’s ‘Professor of Pot’ Convicted

Just because the state has legalized recreational pot doesn't mean there aren't still right ways and wrong ways to sell it. Just ask the 'Professor of Pot'.

Daniel Trevino was convicted of 10 drug trafficking charges by a jury Monday, according to a press release form the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Trevino, who referred to himself as the'professor of Pot', owned Hydro World, a medical marijuana dispensary that had locations in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Jackson, Flint and Mount Pleasant.

The press release states Trevino acted outside of the state laws set up by the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act, and also violated several federal laws.

When arrested, Trevino was in possession of thousands of marijuana plants, even though as a convicted felon, he was only allowed 12 plants and two and a half ounces of pot for personal use.

“Although Trevino has long claimed that what he was doing was legal under the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act, he was not even close to being legal," U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge said in the release. "Trevino had ample opportunity to realize the illegal nature of his business under both federal and state law, given the number of times his operations were searched. He would not stop."

Although both recreational and medical marijuana are legal under Michigan law, the drug is still federally illegal.

Trevino could be sentenced up to 40 years in federal prison.
