It's Memorial Day weekend and even though it's going to be a rainy one, people will still be shooting off fireworks around the state.

However, before you light that bottle rocket there were new laws passed in December 2018 that changed the amount of days you can set fireworks off into the sky. Previously, you were allowed to shoot them off around the federal holidays (day before, day of, day after) but this new law reduced that number and gave local governments more control over consumer fireworks. Here's what you need to know:

  • New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day at 1 a.m.
  • Memorial Day Weekend, only Saturday & Sunday until 11:45 p.m. each day
  • Fridays and Saturdays between June 29th and July 4th, until 11:45 p.m.
  • Labor Day Weekend, specifically Saturday & Sunday, until 11:45 p.m.

So for this weekend it's only LEGAL to fire off fireworks on Saturday & Sunday.

The law was passed after numerous residents around Michigan complained that people were lighting fireworks during all times of the day/night which was not only scaring children and pets but also damaged property.
