More Stores Closing in Michigan! Who Is It Now?
We are just into 2026 and the sad news breaks that another major retailer will be closing all of their Michigan stores. As a matter of fact, they plan to close all of their stores, nationwide. That is a big blow.
Certainly the retail industry, brick-and-mortar locations, have been through the wringer lately. Macy's, Kohl's, JC Penney, Nordstrom, Rite Aid, Joann Fabrics, and Party City for example, closed thousands of stores last year. And now this year another big closure is announced.
According to the Fast Company.com website, Eddie Bauer will be filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and then closing all of their more than 200 locations across the country, including the remaining Michigan stores which are in the Detroit area.
I'm broken hearted since I used to shop Eddie Bauer frequently. But my use of "used to" is true. I loved the store and bought so many things over the years, but haven't been shopping there for some time.

Eddie Bauer goes back over 100 years to 1920 when Eddie Bauer, yes there really was an Eddie Bauer, started a small sporting goods shop. Over the years they, through new ownership, grew to more than 370 stores across North America in the 80s and 90s.
It is a sad fact of life that getting shoppers into actual stores is difficult. We all seem to turn to more online shopping, so the cost of doing business in an actual store location is too costly for the average retailer to handle.
Will Eddie just pack it in and say bye-bye?
Not at all. They will still be open, but online only, at EddieBauer.com.
