Based on a study of search data from Google Trends and post data from Facebook Insights over the past 90 days, Michigan residents plan to “ham it up” this Easter season. (Truth -- I have one in a crock pot in my kitchen as I write this.)

Michigan grocery stores are currently loaded with hams, completely cooked and sold in half or whole portions. Ham labeled fully-cooked really only needs to reheated. Most package directions suggest heating a ham until it reaches 135 degrees in the center.

Hams will also be labeled bone-in shank or butt end.

What's the diference? The butt end comes from the upper thigh, although the tapered shank finish comes from the lower component of the leg.

The shank is easier to carve because it doesn't have a bone in it.

In terms of size, the shank is commonly bigger and you will get a lot more servings out of it. The butt portion is smaller sized and leaner, but has more ham flavor.
