Warning: Check Your Mailbox Michigan, Now!
A warning from the United States Postal Service, USPS, to check our mailboxes as soon as possible because we might not get mail.
Is this a scary thing? Should we be worried and go hide?
Not at all. It's nothing to worry too much about except that the USPS wants all of us to check our mailbox to make sure it's in good condition because there could be a problem if it is not.
Even though National Mailbox Awareness Week was last week, I didn't know we even had such a thing, there is still time to make sure your mailbox is in good working order.
The Post Office wants to be sure your mail is delivered correctly and safely and if your mailbox is broken down in any way they may not be able to deliver it to you.
The USPS says you may need to do these things:
- Replacing loose hinges on a mailbox door.
- Repainting a mailbox that may have rusted or has started to peel.
- Remounting a loosened mailbox post.
- Replacing or adding house numbers
In addition to making sure your mailbox is in good condition, the Postal Service wants you be be aware of security.

The USPS points out that you should always pick up your mail and not leave it the the mailbox very long. The "bad guys" might be mailbox surfing and grab it before you do, or notice that you may not be home because it is piling up, and figure it might be a good idea to break in to your home. Not good!
If you do have to leave home for any length of time, vacation, whatever, do what I always do and have the USPS hold the mail. It's easy, free, and you set the day you want the collected mail delivered.
